• Hip Resurfacing in 2026

The visitors to my site probably want to know how the resurfacing method is doing today. The method has been used without interruption since its start in 1996. Of all 3,500 patients who have asked me for help since 2006, as of January 1, 2026 a full 999 have undergone the procedure. In 2025, for example, there were 82 patients. Each year, around 15 operations were also performed bilaterally (simultaneously on both hips).

  • The hip resurfacing method today 2025

The hip resurfacing method continues to be popular under the informed hip patients. It is in other words important to be told about the method’s existence by someone. If you did not end up on my website through a Google search, it is usually a former hip patient who has provided some information about the method and its unbeatable advantages from own experience. Currently, all female hip patients are offered a ceramic resurfacing prosthesis (CoC / Ceramic on Ceramic) while all men are still recommended a metal resurfacing prosthesis (MoM / Metal on Metal). I am happy to explain why this difference exists between women and men to those interested…

  • New Dutch Facebook group

This week (week 4 2023) the group “over heupen gesproken…” was started, a new Dutch Facebook group specifically for the hip patients that are searching for help and information. While the emphasis is on hip resurfacing we even cover the better THP (total hip prosthesis) with normal size ceramic femoral head and ceramic acetabular cup. Naturally we also address the new ceramic hip resurfacing “ReCerf” that in particular can be the solution for many women. The MoM (metal-on-metal) hip resurfacing remains the preferred solution and standard for men.

  • New Nordens Hippies meeting September 2022

After a few years interruption due to Covid-19 we are now looking forward to a normal weekend meeting again September 2022. As before it will be held somewhere in Örebro in Sweden, the meetings on the Saturday and the remaining consultations on the Sunday. We expect a very large attendance of at least 150 so please show your interest as soon as possible (to me by email only). You will then be kept informed of any updates, the exact weekend and the venue. A 15 minute consultation with one of the three attending surgeons is available to a limited group and if booked in time. Ron van Mierlo

  • New meeting in Örebro

New meeting in Örebro The 13th of June and exactly a year since the last meeting all those with hip problems and previously operated people can meet others in the same or similar situation. Apart from the possibility to ask questions and discus problems, even a consultation is offered with the participating surgeon. It will be of help to us hip patients when we are given the chance to meet and hear the experiences of others who have already gone through similar problems and perhaps have a hip operation behind them. This year, just as the previous two meetings, Dr. Raimund Völker from München will be the speaker but next…

  • Preliminary Report of Swedish Hip Registry over 2013

Preliminary Report of Swedish Hip Registry over 2013 A preliminary Annual Report over 2013 from the Swedish Hip Registry is now available (in Swedish), see: http://www.shpr.se/Libraries/Documents/Arsrapport_2013_Tabeller.sflb.ashx As the name indicates the report does in  any case cover all the tables. During 2013 Swedish surgeons have used 16299 hip prostheses, of which 70 were hip resurfacings, a decrease of 2 compared with 2012. During 2013 I have been able to help 22 persons with a hip operation by foreign hip resurfacing specialists, this figure is not taken up by the data shown in the registry’s report. /Ron.

  • BMHR production stops

BMHR production stops That Smith & Nephew stops with the production of the well known and successful BMHR (Birmingham Mid-Head Resection) prosthesis is sad and a hard blow to a large group of hip patients all over the world. BMHR exactly filled the large gap that previously existed between hip resurfacing prostheses like S&N’s own BHR and more traditional hip prostheses. BMHR had a unique place between other hip prostheses and apart from the application as pure “primary prosthesis” it could in a number of situations also be used in revisions after a BHR or another hip resurfacing while all the advantages of hip resurfacing and naturally the femoral neck…

  • Blood plasma better than Cortisone!

Recent research has shown that treatment with PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma, derived from a patient’s own blood through centrifuging) for chronical problem with joints, tendons and muscles gives a more effektive and longer lasting effect than Cortisone. On top of the better effects with PRP the patient can now also avoid the disadvantages that synthetical Cortisone involves. All of you that are considering an injection in the hip in an attempt to minmize the pain and perhaps postpone the operation a little should now be able to refuse Cortisone and in stead demand treatment with PRP (derived from your own blood). There is much information on the Internet on treatment with…
